Root Canal

Root Canal Therapy

Many people are under the impression that a root canal is a scary and painful procedure; however, it is a minimally invasive procedure with little to no pain! For patients in Middletown, Red Bank, and the surrounding communities needing a root canal, the experienced dental team at Navesink Dental Care will make the process smooth with very little discomfort.

What is a root canal?

Under your tooth’s enamel, and within the dentin, is an area called the pulp, which carries the tooth’s nerve, veins, arteries and lymph vessels. Root canals are very small divisions that branch off from the top of the pulp to the tip of the root. A tooth has at least one but no more than four root canals.

The pulp can become infected due to a deep cavity or fracture that allows bacteria to grow. To save the tooth, the pulp needs to be removed, and the canals need to be sterilized and filled. A crown is usually necessary to complete the restoration of the tooth.

Root canal therapy takes about two hours and may require two visits to our Middletown practice. The procedure is completed with rotary endodontic tools and with numbing medication, making it a fairly quiet, painless and gentle treatment.

Symptoms of an Infected Tooth:
  • A bad taste in your mouth
  • Increased sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures
  • Increased sensitivity to sweets
  • Swelling
  • Tooth pain, especially when biting or chewing
